State Sen. Nicholas Scutari (D-Union) said he will have a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee Monday, the story said. Scutari, who is chairman of the committee, called it the first step in the process of finally reversing punitive marijuana laws that have caused harm to residents and communities, according to Nj.com.
The committee has invited people with knowledge of the issue to testify, including health professionals, law enforcement officers, clergy, civil rights organizations and policy experts, NJ.com said.
Medical marijuana has been legal in New Jersey since 2010, Nj.com reported. However, in the wake of opposition by Gov. Chris Christie, there are few medical marijuana dispensaries and it’s extremely difficult to meet the medical standard for access, causing some families with critically ill loved ones to move out of state for relief, the story said.
